GCN visits Rest-a-While Service Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The GCN continued its on-going community project with a visit to Rest-a-While Service Centre for the Aged, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The visit formed part of the centre\u2019s celebrations for month of the elderly.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The team was put straight to work, making sure the members had enough water and juice, while they enjoyed the music of Pieter Cloete.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rest a While visit\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eni5rQFd2FI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The GCN sales manager Theresa Morgan, sports journalist Puleng Sekabate and journalist Leigh Hodgson then got their fingers sticky preparing plates of sweet treats for those in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>These were served after Cloete finished his performance.<\/p>\n<p>The team also took time to chat to the elderly, making them feel appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>Dancing ensued and the team watched in delight as couples took the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy Morgan finished the visit by sharing some of the centre\u2019s project with the GCN team, these included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0&#8220;Adopt a Granny&#8221; project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This encourages businesses or members of the community to donate towards feeding one or more members a few times a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA large number of our members are state pensioners who have to survive on social grants,\u201d said Wendy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Recycling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Rest-a-While is a recycling centre for paper and glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis brings in some funds for the centre,\u201d Wendy said.<\/p>\n<p>Community members are encouraged to bring in their recyclable goods.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Second-hand shop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Second-hand goods, books, clothes are sold at the shop to raise funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny donations are always appreciated,\u201d said Wendy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Food parcels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEvery December we try to make up at least 200 food parcels,\u201d explained Wendy.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in getting involved in this project is asked to donate tea, sugar, long life milk, powder milk, cup-of-soup, two minute noodles, tinned foods (not curry), toiletries and a few treats like biscuits, sweets or chocolates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who would
