In light of Child Protection Week, locals share their ideas on how they think children should protect themselves.
Child Protection Week.
Siyabulela Mkhetsana: “I see children hitchhiking daily to get to school or other places and they should be warned about that, as it could lead to them being abducted.”
Craig de Bruin: “I advise parents to take better care of their children. This includes monitoring their friendships, the activities they participate in and warning them of bad friends and harmful substances.”
Wandile Zulu: “I think they should introduce self-defence classes at schools to teach children how to protect themselves in different situations and even how to report uncomfortable incidents they find themselves in.”
Petrus Brits: “Introducing self-defence classes at schools could help children. The government also needs to invest more money in the protection of children by hiring and placing patrol guards on street corners.”
Phumza Banga: “Children should not talk to strangers, even if they offer them money. And when they leave school heading home, they should not stop in any dodgy places.”
Precy Ramontja: “When children are left at home alone, they should not open the door to people they do not know. They must not talk to strangers or accept lifts from them.”
